The ⁠Remythologization in the Modern Era: Traces of the Transformation from Prometheus to Frankenstein

This study systematically examines the transformation of the Prometheus myth from antiquity to the present, analyzing how myths are re-produced in the modern era. The main objective is to reveal how the figure of Prometheus has been interpreted across different historical and cultural contexts and to explore its role in contemporary narratives. The theoretical framework is based on the methodological approaches of the history of religions. Mircea Eliade's concept of "sacred time," Joseph Campbell's "archetype theory," Claude Lévi-Strauss's "structuralist myth analysis," and Bronislaw Malinowski's "functionalist approach" are jointly employed to explain the processes of myth re-production. Within this framework, the concept of remythologization serves as a key tool in understanding how myths persist within contemporary cultural forms. Methodologically, comparative literature and myth analysis are combined, with intertextual readings carried out between classical and modern texts. The study also examines contemporary representations of Prometheus to illustrate the most recent stage of this transformation. Through a semiotic approach, the semantic shifts, symbolic codes, and functional changes of the Prometheus figure within different systems of signification are analyzed to better understand its representational and symbolic dimensions. Overall, the research demonstrates that the Prometheus myth has continually adapted to reflect the central concerns of each era within the Western cultural context. Furthermore, the study highlights how approaches from the history of religions can be integrated with comparative literary studies, thereby contributing to interdisciplinary research. In conclusion, the research shows that myths are not static or archaic narratives of the past, but dynamic cultural structures that are constantly reinterpreted. At the center of this study, Prometheus's fire continues to serve as a powerful metaphor for humanity's pursuit of knowledge, creativity, and ethical responsibility.
