Özet (EN)
The name of this study is Modeling-based Science Teaching and its Effect, the way science concepts or concerns connect to daily life of middle school students aged 12-16 and how science affects young learners. This thesis was prepared by Canser Gül Güldal under the supervision of Associate Professor Mustafa Doğru in the academic year 2017-2017 of the Science Education Program of Primary Education Department. The purpose of this study, for the 6th grade students' Science Class, that is the ''Month and Life of our Solar System''is to prepare lesson plans about the understanding of science teaching based on modeling as well as arranging them according to the current teaching program so that 1 week students would apply a pilot study and by the end of the following 8 weeks students would be able to realise whether they closely relate to the topic or notice any difference regarding their daily routines. The research is applied to a total of 65 students of classes 6A and 6C, data taken from a middle school located in Muratpaşa, Antalya during the academic year of 2016-2017. In this research, 6A represents the experimental group while 6C represents the controlling group. Since these groups (experimental and controlling) are not placed in random distribution, the pre-test/ post-test unequal control group method of quasi-experimental design is applied in the quantitive dimension. In qualitative aspect of the work, phenomenological approach is taken as basis. As a means of collecting data on the quantitive aspect of the study, the Science Anxiety Scale developed by Güzeller and Doğru was used to measure the students concern about the science fiction. Ten quantitive open-endend questions developed by the research were used to determine students ability to associate science with everyday life as a qualitative data collection tool. Analysis for the quantitive data obtained from the study was done by single factor coveriance analysis (ANCOVA). On the other hand, qualititive data was analyzed both descriptively and contexctually according to the phenomenological approach. As a summary, no difference was found between the experimental and controlling group in the level of anxiety in terms of quantitive results. Whereas, in terms of qualitative results, the levels of association of science concepts with daily life, were different between experimental and controlling groups.
