Symbolism in Modern Arabic literature: The case of Zakaria Tamer

In this study, in which symbolism and the symbolic use of language are exemlified from a literary point of view, first of all, the concept of symbol is emphasized and it is tried to reveal how the generally accepted theoretical approaches define and interpret symbols. Then, from a holistic approach, the study of symbolic language is discussed from the perspectice of World literature and Arabic literature. Finally, general information about the life and literary personality of the Syrian short story writer Zakaria Tamer, one of the representatives of Modern Arabic literature, who is the subject of our study, is given and the use of symbols and symbolic language in his works are analyzed. Considered one of the pioneers of storytelling in his country, Tamer, is one of the literary figures of the expressionism movement. Considered as the poet of Arabic prose in some evaluations, what distinguishes Tamer from other writers is the style he is considered to have brought to Arabic storytelling with his symbolic language. The author, who received full marks from the critics as the innovator of this new style, has become a pen that the last generation follows and takes as an example. Zakaria Tamer is a literary figure who is considered important in both Arabic and world literature is widely read and whose works have been translated into other languages and who complies with the criteria and sensitivities of contemporary literature. In our country, Tamer, who is the subject of academic modern Arabic literature studies, is mostly examined with his works in the field of children's literature. Our study will be carried out over all the areas in which the author has written, and will be aimed at examining the contribution of his symbolic language, which is reflected in his works and dominates almost all of them, to World literature in particular Arabic literature, regardless of the distinction between adult and children's literature. In addition, it will be attempted to present criteria for determining that Modern Arabic Literature is a worl-wilde literature, that the translation period has ended and the place of Arabic prose has reached in terms of short stories.
