Marri̇age i̇n the modern city: Case of Çorum

There are three important transitional periods in human life: birth, marriage and death. These periods are an expression of the transition to a different stage of life. It is known that many studies have been conducted both in Turkey and around the world on the practices and practices of transition periods. Practices that are performed in different ways according to the cultural background and the region create a rich picture in itself. The marriage transition period, which is one of these periods, has been shaped and performed in various ways from past to present depending on the culture and geography. Cultural elements, which have been transferred orally or in writing by changing and transforming until today, have sometimes come to the present day with new creations. Among the main reasons for this change and transformation, it is possible to mention the transition from rural life to urban life. Changes experienced in relation to place not only have had an impact on life practices, but also have paved the way for the change and transformation of culture. Because space is the patron of collective consciousness and memory. The memory of space facilitates the way culture is practiced, while the change of space reveals its forgetfulness. Of course, it is possible to say that change and transformation do not only take place in line with these factors. The development of technology, the desire to live as modern life requires, the commodification of products and the shaping of cultural elements by the industry are among the factors that cause change and transformation. The culture industry, which is especially effective on who the individual is, how he is perceived in the city and directing of consumption, has reshaped tradition between fashion and popularity. In this study, the developments in this direction have been tried to be explained in relation to the practices of the marriage transition period in Corum city center. vii The study was based on written sources and interviews and observations conducted with the permission of Hitit University Non-Interventional Research Ethics Committee. As a result of the research, it can be said that tradition is shaped between fashion and popularity, modernity is effective on life practices, accordingly, the culture industry transforms tradition into a commoditized product, and the individual's understanding of culture is changed in this direction. Of course, there will be changes depending on time, place or the usual course of events. However, the realization of cultural practices and practices in an industrial context other than their intended purpose will lead to the forgetting of the essence of the tradition. It is predicted that the form of forgetting, which is specific to the individual at first, may lead to collective forgetting over time. In this context, it is known that many efforts have been made to prevent the disappearance of local cultural colors, accumulation and memory through individual efforts, national and international consensus. In this sense, it is evaluated in this study through marriage transition period practices that local cultures evolve in a different direction with global cultural currents day by day and that these currents are more visible in society with new application areas.
