Ottoman/Turkish Greek community in modern historiography

The aim of the study is to convey how the position, status, socio-cultural lifestyle, economic and social roles of the Greek-Orthodox community, one of the autochthonous peoples of Anatolia and the Balkans, under a Muslim administration starting with the dominance of the Ottoman Empire in Anatolia and the Balkans, continuing with the foundation of the new Turkish Republic until today, and the Greek identity formed by all these are perceived in the Turkish historiography according to different ideological perspectives. For this purpose, six different history magazines with different ideological tendencies were reviewed and it was examined how the Greek identity was perceived in different events or situations where the public attention was considered necessary, and it was tried to understand and evaluate objectively what kind of impression Turkish historiography wants to create in Turkish society about the Greek-Orthodox community. The common concerns, historical traumas with a great effect, and the general beliefs were meticulously presented and the reasons were questioned in a comparative manner. Because of the fact that the audience addressed is the Turkish society, by mentioning the effects of these social perception studies on the society and their consequences for the Greek people, it was aimed to show how abstract, verbal description, concrete and the practical response of the social opposition phenomenon will manifest itself through events. The process of transition from pre-modern society to modern social structure and the response of the society, political structure and state institutions to this transformation, and how the development of relations with the Greek community that were affected by this response were defined. In line with the theoretical background of the study, serious handicaps of the nationalist ideology, the nation-state process and the new ideological environment created by the regenerated historiography in the post-modern state era on the Turkish-Muslim community and the Greek-Orthodox community, the 'others' in this society, will be explained.
