Abstract (EN)

In this study, the works of the architect Sedat Gurel was investigated within the framework of the relationship between modernism and locality, and the unique architectural interpretationthat he brought into modernism that is specific to the context of Turkey has been tried to presented in line with his theoretical studies and architectural structures. In line with this objective and scope, the first chapter of the thesis investigated the 'Relationship of Modernism and Locality', while the second chapter examined the 'Relationship Between Modernism and Locality in Turkey'. In the last chapter, in line with the theoretical framework formed as a result of the first two sections, Sedat Gurel's architecturalunderstanding, his theoretical studies and architectural structures are examined in order toput forward the specific interpretation he brought to modernism in relation to the context of Turkey. The last chapter included an analysis of Sedat Gurel's architectural structures according to the six criteria of Critical Regionalism, which was developed by Kenneth Frampton, and Gurel's structures were evaluated in terms of their relationship to topography, environment, climate, tactile senses, local materials and natural light. As a result of the theoretical framework and the case study analysis, it was observed that the architect Sedat Gurel had both the rationalist design approach brought forward by modernism and also gave importance to the context where his buildings were located, considering theclimate, culture, life style and the environmental characteristics of the region in his designs. In this framework, Sedat Gurel is found to be a pioneering name within his period, because of his unique architectural approach that interpreted modernism to bespecific to the context of Turkey.
