Turbofan engine selection by AHP method for narrow body passenger aircraft in terms of engine performance and characteristics

As the most critical and valuable component of a commercial passenger aircraft, the aircraft engine has significant market potential. New generation engines with low emissions, low weight and new technologies are being developed to meet the increasing demand with the growth of the aviation industry, resulting in fuel efficiency and hence cost and efficiency for airline operators. Companies in the aircraft engine market are investing in research and development of new engine models utilizing the latest technologies such as additive manufacturing and composite technologies. However, despite all these advancements, new generation aircraft engines also fail and affect flight safety. In this study, five engines were selected: three conventional CFM56-5B, CFM56- 7B, V2500 and two modern CFM LEAP-1A/CFM LEAP-1B and PW1100 engines. The operational limits and characteristics of the engines were ranked using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a multi-criteria decision making method. While determining the criteria, both literature review and expert opinions were taken into consideration. These are maximum operating temperatures, maximum allowable rotor speeds, pressure limits, power generated, fuel consumption and carbon emissions, reliability, ease of maintenance, low cost, low cost, speed of access to components, engine weight. As a result of the AHP analysis, the order of engine selection was CFM LEAP-1A/B, V2500, CFM56-7B, PW1100 and finally CFM56-5B in order of priority.
