Periodicals published by Turkish soldiers from prison camp in egypt - review, index, selected texts

Ottoman Empire, which battled mostly with England on various fronts in World War I, left the war defeated and the Empire's soldiers are captived by Russia, France, Romania, Italy, and especially England. The English captured Turkish captived soldiers at camps which were built by the English in Egypt and named as Turra, Seydibeşir, Heliopolis, Rasel Tin, Bilbeis, and Maadi. Turkish soldiers in Egypt did not feel unfamiliar geographically compared to prisoners who were settled in Russia, Corsica, and Burma; and started periodical publication activities with national consciousness and mind and with purposes like sort of a motivation source, communicating within the camp and news flow from the abroad. Copies of 15 periodicals that were published between the years 1919-1920 and mimeographed, such as Kızıl Elma, Kafes, Işık, Karikatür, Esaret, Badiye, Garnizon, Yarın, Tan, Nilüfer, İzmir, Türk Varlığı, Nasrettin Hoca, Sadâ and Zincir were located in libraries; and literary and intellectual activity was reviewed in journals/newspapers aforementioned. Findings about the camp life were also reached from these periodicals and included in the study. Besides, copies of some periodicals, such as Tetebbuʻ, Hilal, Ocak, and Dağarcık, were not found even though their titles are present in numerous adverts and writings. While some journals' all issues were reached (Yarın), some journals' issues could not be detected. In this study, all the writings, without excluding any, were analyzed chronologically and analyses of all the contents in the journals/newspapers were sorted with the title of the index. Some writings which contain indicative information about literary and intellectual activity and camp life were translated into the Latin-based Turkish alphabet and exhibited as selected texts by classifying them according to their topics or category.
