A sociological analysis of the role of the family as the carrier of consistent values

This research study aims to examine the role of family as the carrier of conservative values from a sociological perspective. The role of family in conveying conservative values, the mechanisms on which this role is based, and the problems faced by family while carrying out this role have been investigated. In order to achieve this aim, the data of the research were collected from 30 participants, who are parents and have children, residing in Samsun. The participants are 16 women and 14 men from different age groups, different occupations and income groups. Qualitative research design and case model were used in the research. The data of the research were collected by face-to-face interviews and analyzed by in-depth content analysis method. The findings have shown that parents care about the values of religion, state, family, morality, tradition and society. It has been understood that some of the parents thought that the values of religion, state, morality, family, tradition and society would never or should not change, however, most of the parents thought that these values could change. It has been determined that the primary sources that parents learn about the values of religion, state, morality, family, tradition and society are family, school and environment. It has been determined that parents, without exception, transfer or plan to transfer the values of religion, state, morality, family, tradition and society to their children. It has been understood that all parents use the method of telling and directing by speaking to convey the values to their children. It has also been observed that almost all of the parents try to set an example by experiencing what they tell. It has been understood that the obvious motivation behind the parents' desire to convey the values of religion, state, morality, family, tradition and society to their children is to ensure a sustainable good life, to build and revive the future, and to ensure that their children become good individuals. It has been determined that the negative factors that cause a difference between the values of parents and the values of their children and prevent parents from transferring their values to their children are school, TV/films and smart phones, especially social media and environment. It has been understood that the parents' methods of combating these negative factors are mostly to control and limit the use of technology, to show more love and understanding to their children, and to take care of their children closely.
