The "Vatan Cephesi̇" as a tool for suppressing the opposition

Since the establishment of the Republic, there have been numerous attempts to found new political parties; however, many of these parties were either closed down or dissolved for various reasons. These parties, established during the Republican era, were often formed by members of or under the guidance of the founding cadres of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP). For this reason, CHP holds a significant place in Turkish politics with its educational and instructive mission. In 1945, Demokrat Parti (DP) was founded under the leadership of deputies who had split from the CHP, and with the 1950 elections, DP took over the government from CHP, marking the beginning of a ten-year DP era. The main subject of this study is the organization "Vatan Cephesi," established shortly before the 27 May 1960 military coup — a major turning point in Turkish political history — and one which has not been extensively studied in the literature. In preparing this study, a literature review was conducted on the transition to a multi-party system and the Demokrat Parti period. Memoirs, daily newspapers, publications, parliamentary records, and Yassıada trial transcripts and verdicts were examined. The thoughts and objectives of the politicians on trial were also analyzed. The study seeks to answer the following questions: Why was the Vatan Cephesi organization deemed necessary? What was its intended purpose? What activities did it undertake? And what were the consequences of its formation? The key findings of the study suggest that party leaders with CHP backgrounds attempted to transform society through an intermediary institution, drawing on their past experiences in CHP. They aimed to consolidate the public — especially their own voter base — in line with party policies. However, despite this intention, the Vatan Cephesi deepened social polarization and division. The process was abruptly interrupted by the 27 May military coup, and the organization was unable to achieve its goals within the short time available. Nonetheless, Vatan Cephesi took its place in Turkish political history as a significant institution and one of the key issues in both the lead-up to the coup and the subsequent trials.
