Abstract (EN)

Rival, is the next most important type after the enamoured and the beloved types in the Ottoman poetry called Divan. In the tradition of this type of poetry, the rival is seen as an obstacle to the enamoured person and the beloved one, impeding them to join each other by interfering between them. In the enamoured person's eyes, everybody is considered as a rival apart from himself and the beloved one. In their poems, Divan poets have also come up with similar meanings in the meaning frame of the rival type. Suleyman the Magnificent, who lived during the period considered as the most brilliant of the Ottoman State throughout his reign, was at the same time a poet who also wrote poems designated as Muhibbî, In this thesis, it is examined how the Sultan, as a poet, is handling the type rival in the divan of Muhibbî. In this study, we have first determined the words corresponding to both genders of rival and then the characteristics of the type rival. Apart from it, persons, animals and other elements compared to the rival type were also analysed in this thesis. Thus, in this thesis, we have tried to put forward whether the perception of rival is different in the Sultan poet from the other poets of the divan literature by examining the said perception of rival in the Sultan poet. With this thesis, we are aiming to examine in detail the motif of rival by analysing an example of the Sultan poet as it has never been made before.
