Thoughts of multiparal pregnancy on breastfeeding and tandem breastfeeding and affecting factors

The study was conducted in a descriptive type to determine the views of multiparous pregnant women who applied to the NST outpatient clinic of a district state hospital about breastfeeding and tandem breastfeeding during pregnancy and the factors affecting it. The population of the study consisted of 300 multiparous pregnant women who applied to the NST outpatient clinic between March and May 2022, and the study was conducted with 271 pregnant women. Research data were collected face to face through a questionnaire created by the researcher. The data obtained from the research were used in statistical analysis using SPSS (Statistical package for the Social Sciences) 25.0 package program, and number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-Square, Fisher's Exact Perason, t test and Mann Whitney U test were used. In the study, most of the pregnant women stated that the baby should receive only breast milk for 6 months and breastfeeding should be continued until the age of 2 years. It was determined that very few of the pregnant women continued to breastfeed during their pregnancies, and the majority of them did not continue to breastfeed due to insufficient breast milk and the baby's own abandonment. Few of the pregnant women stated that breastfeeding should be continued during pregnancy and 47.3% of these pregnant women stated that they would continue breastfeeding until the health personnel (doctor/midwife/nurse) said that they should stop breastfeeding. In addition, it was determined that most of the pregnant women thought that breastfeeding during pregnancy would not cause any harm to the mother, pregnancy and the baby in the mother's womb, while a few of them thought that breastfeeding during pregnancy may cause premature birth/abortion and the baby in the mother's womb cannot stay/feed without vitamins. 28.4% of the pregnant women became pregnant during the breastfeeding period and more than half of these pregnant women continued to breastfeed after realizing that they were pregnant; The average of this period is 1-13. observed between weeks. It was determined that 40.3% of the pregnants stopped breastfeeding due to the doctor/midwife/nurse, 48.0% of them were caused by their close relatives and 58.4% of the health personnel were undecided about their breastfeeding during pregnancy. In the study, it was determined that 28.8% of the pregnant women knew about tandem breastfeeding, and 33.3% of those who knew tandem breastfeeding learned tandem breastfeeding from doctors/midwives/nurses. Only 10% of all pregnant women participating in the study; It has been determined that one fourth of the mothers who are breastfeeding in their current pregnancies consider tandem breastfeeding and if they become pregnant again during the breastfeeding period after the birth, the majority of them will not continue to breastfeed. Between the education levels of the pregnant women and the thought of breastfeeding during pregnancy; between breastfeeding thinking and family type, planned pregnancy, gestational week, number of pregnancies, number of births and number of living children; It was determined that there is a significant relationship between the mothers who became pregnant during the breastfeeding period and the status of continuing to breastfeed and their thinking of tandem breastfeeding (p<0.05). According to the results of the study; It was determined that the majority of pregnant women had negative thoughts about breastfeeding and tandem breastfeeding during pregnancy. For this purpose, it is recommended to provide support and consultancy services to pregnant women about breastfeeding and tandem breastfeeding during pregnancy by health professionals within the interconceptional care services.
