Measurement of choroid plexus apparent diffusion coefficient values in patients with and without active plaque in multiple sclerosis disease and comparison with control group

Abstract (EN)

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease that occurs when autoreactive T lymphocytes migrate from the periphery to the central nervous system and cause an immune response to glial cells and neurons. Choroid plexuses play an indispensable role in the transmission of T lymphocytes to the central nervous system. There are no previous studies evaluating the involvement of the choroid plexus with diffusion weighted imaging. In this study, we investigated the detectability of inflammation in the choroid plexus in patients with multiple sclerosis using diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Sixty patients who met the study criteria and had imaging between January 2020 and August 2023 were included in the study.The patients were divided into two groups as 30 patients with active plaque and 30 patients without active plaque. For the control group, a healthy control group consisting of 30 people was formed in the same date range. Choroid plexus ADC values were measured separately for left and right. A total of 60 ADC measurements in each group were compared between the groups by One Way Anova test. The comparison of the groups with and without active plaque was calculated as p=0.92, the comparison of the groups with active plaque and healthy control group was calculated as p=0.69, the comparison of the groups without active plaque and healthy control group was calculated as p=0.90 and no statistically significant difference was found between any groups. It was thought that the small number of patients and technical limitations may be involved in the insignificant results. On the other hand, it should be considered that ADC values may not be sufficient in the evaluation of choroid plexus involvement. Large-scale studies are needed to obtain sufficient data on this issue.
