Social and political criticism in Murat Uyurkulak's novels

The recent history of the Republic of Turkey, starting from the last period of the Ottoman Empire to the present day, has witnessed major social and political events. The Armenian Relocation, the Population Exchange, the Wealth Tax, reform movements, military operations, the political, legal and social situation of minorities are just a few of them. While the newly established Republic of Turkey has shouldered the burden of the past, it is also trying to build the future. This process is painful, traumatic, tragic and sometimes even tragicomic. History can't penetrate every field while narrating this process. In such cases, art, and literature as a branch of it, is in an ideal position to fill this empty space of history through its genres and techniques. Murat Uyurkulak is a remarkable name among post-2000 novelists. He is a writer who uses ironic language in his novels and tries to use Turkish and its rich vocabulary as much as he can. When we look at the subjects of his works, we see the events in the recent history of the Republic of Turkey, social changes, those who are ignored, humiliated and marginalized. In this study, Murat Uyurkulak's social and political criticisms of recent history will be analyzed through the literary techniques of parody, irony, satire and pastiche.
