Abstract (EN)

This study examines how Alevi communities who migrated from rural areas to urban centers strive to preserve the ritual of musahiplik—a traditional spiritual companionship practice—within the context of Tuzluçayır neighborhood in Mamak district, Ankara. In Alevism, musahiplik plays a vital role in reinforcing social solidarity, moral responsibility, and communal identity. However, the transition from rural to urban life has weakened traditional bonds, challenged intergenerational transmission, and posed threats to the sustainability of such rituals due to the individualizing effects of urbanization. Using qualitative research methods, data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation with Alevi residents in the neighborhood. Findings reveal that the Alevi community in Tuzluçayır attempts to sustain the practice of musahiplik mainly through cemevis (Alevi cultural-religious centers), with older generations being more committed to the tradition, while younger generations show reduced engagement. Migration and changing socio-cultural dynamics have led to a transformation in both the form and meaning of the ritual. This study contributes to understanding the impact of urbanization on Alevi religious practices and emphasizes the crucial role of community solidarity and cemevis in preserving cultural heritage.
