Mustafa Behcet Efendi and his translation, "Târîkh-i Mısır" (Analysis and text)

Egypt remained an important center throughout the history and became a part of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century during the reign of Yavuz Sultan Selim. But not so much, two centuries later, it emerged as an international problem. Due to its time-varying nature, Egypt has been very important to historians, and many researches have been conducted about Egypt. Two of these researches belong to Abd al-Rahman al-Jabartī. The first of these works is four volumes and is known as Aja'ib al-Athâr fi'l-Tarâjim va'l-Akhbâr, which contains general Egyptian history. The other work is Mazhar al-Taqdîs bi-dhahâb Davlat al-Fransîs, whose subject is the French campaign of Egypt under the leadership of Napoleon Bonaparte. This study is composed of introduction and three main sections. It aims to reveal the translation of the book named Târîkh-i Mısır, which is the Turkish translation of Mazhar al-Taqdîs by Mustafa Behcet Efendi, to today's letters in the light of comparison of different copies. Accordingly, we gave information about the life stories and works of the author of the work 'Abd al-Rahman al-Jabartī and its translator Mustafa Behcet Efendi in the first part and we tried to identify the relationship between Aja'ib al-Athâr and Mazhar al-Taqdîs. We devoted the second part to the translation called "Târîkh-i Mısır" and we mentioned the various aspects of the work such as its content, style, and literary features. By introducing the copies we identified, we detailed the relations between copies in the second part. The third and last section constitutes the text section in which we transferred "Târîh-i Mısır" to today's letters.
