A study of learning differences between monolingual and bilingual students in translation and interpreting

As in any field that involves social interaction with other people, universities bring together people from many different cities, countries, cultures and religions. Especially in foreign language subjects, particularly in translation and interpreting, students who grew up in different countries study together. Since the 1960s, there has been a significant Turkish population living in various European countries, especially Germany. This situation can be traced back to the migration of Turks abroad who are migrating for work. Even though some of these people have acquired the citizenship of the country in which they live, they are still referred to as being of Turkish origin. Children of Turkish families living in Germany generally grow up bilingual and bicultural. This duality can sometimes be a great advantage and sometimes a disadvantage. This study investigated the learning differences between students of Translation and Interpreting German who grew up bilingual in Germany and students who grew up in Turkey and learned German as a foreign language. As part of this study, which is based on a qualitative research method, an extensive literature review on the topic was conducted. Important points were compiled. Different studies were compared and an attempt was made to draw a general conclusion. An attempt was made to identify the impact of differences between students on their acquisition of translation skills. There are studies that have similarities with the topic of this paper and certain parts of these studies mentioned language and culture acquisition in bilingual and monolingual children. However, an extensive literature search revealed that there is no study that focuses on the formation of translation acquisition in bilingual and monolingual students. Compared to other disciplines, translation studies is a very young discipline and the literature in the field continues to evolve with each new study. For this reason, each new study in the field aims to contribute to the development of translation studies as a discipline in its own right. In this regard, this study aims to fill a gap in the field.
