An examination of information design in museums: A case study of the Private Ahmet Yakupoğlu Museum

This thesis focuses on the function and importance of information design in museums, specifically aiming to develop original, contemporary, and user-centered informational design solutions for the newly established Private Ahmet Yakupoğlu Museum. The primary objective of the research is to create design models in the museum that enable visitors to access information in ways that are easy, understandable, and aesthetically enriched. A qualitative research method was adopted, combining literature review, field observation, design analysis, and implementation studies. Within the conceptual framework, topics such as the history of museums, contemporary museology, graphic design, and information design theories were addressed. The study analyzed the types, functions, and current approaches of museum information designs. In the application phase, original and holistic information design solutions were developed for the Private Ahmet Yakupoğlu Museum and evaluated from visual, functional, and pedagogical perspectives. According to the research findings, traditional museum information panels and static labels are insufficient for visitor comprehension; especially multilingual, digital, and interactive designs that adhere to aesthetic and sustainability principles significantly enhance the museum experience. Field observations and comparative analyses demonstrate that typography, color, material, and user-friendly layouts improve museum perception and visitor satisfaction. As a result, the proposed model offers a sustainable solution that preserves local cultural heritage while meeting universal museology standards, integrating digital and traditional approaches. This study proposes a flexible, innovative, and interdisciplinary approach for similar museums in Turkey and around the world, aiming to promote the dissemination of original and contemporary applications in museum information design.
