ABSTRACTA NUMERICAL SOLUTION FOR NANOSECONDSINGLE CRYSTAL UPCONVERSION OPTICALPARAMETRIC OSCILLATORSAteş YalabıksM.S. in Electrical and Electronics EngineeringSupervisor: Prof. Dr. Orhan Aytü r uJune, 2005A model of single-crystal upconversion optical parametric oscillators (OPO?s)is a valuable tool for design and optimization. In these devices, a single non-linear crystal is used both for optical parametric ampliï¬cation (OPA) and sum-frequency/second-harmonic generation (SFG/SHG). This thesis presents a com-putational model for single-crystal upconversion OPO?s with pump pulse dura-tions on the order of few nanoseconds. When the duration of the pump pulseis longer than the round trip time of the cavity used in the OPO, the transientnature of the problem must be taken into consideration. Besides the evolutions ofthe interacting light beams in time, the beam proï¬les and eï¬ects due to diï¬rac-tion are incorporated into the model. Besides the model, incorporating nonlinearinteraction and diï¬raction inside the crystal, solutions for diï¬erent cavity compo-nents are given in detail. Computational results for a class-D sum-frequency OPOare presented, which are in good agreement with experimental measurements.Keywords: Second order nonlinear interaction, non-uniform beam proï¬le, opti-cal parametric oscillator, sum-frequency generation, second-harmonic generation,numeric model.iii
