The quality of life, depression, anxiety and cognitive failures in preoperative and postoperative comparison and the relation between inflammation scores in nasal polyposis case

Objective; To evaluate pre- and post-operational rhinologic and extra-rhinologic symptoms like quality of life, depression, anxiety and cognitive abilities; and their connection with tissue inflammation scores in nasal polyposis patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. It was thought that there is an link between differences in inflammation's and symptom severity, and we aim to show this linkage in this study. Methods; 40 of 103 nasal polyposis patients who undergo endoscopic sinus surgery between March 2015 and May 2019 in Inonu University Department of Otorhinolaryngology has been included in this study. SNOT-22, BAI, BDI and CFQ surveys have been performed pre- and post-operationally to the patient who have completed their 6th months after the operation. Polyp tissue samples have been analyzed routinely and categorized mild, intermediate and severe by their mucosal inflammation. The linkage between mucosal inflammation and SNOT-22, BAI, BDI and CFQ scores have been examined. Findings; In histopathological examination, patients have been categorized by their inflammation level as; 23(%57,3) mild, 11(%27,5) intermediate and 6(%15) severe. There was a meaningful decrease in SNOT-22 total scores (p=0.0001), BDI scores (p=0.0001), BAI scores (p=0.0001) and CFQ scores (p=0.0001) in patients following the endoscopic sinus surgery. There wasn't and meaningful difference between pre- and post-operational SNOT-22 total scores (p>0.5) BDI scores (p>0.5), BAI scores (p>0.5) and CFQ scores (p>0.5) when compared to inflammation categories. There was a meaningful improvement in patients quality of life, depression, anxiety and cognitive abilities, but there were no meaningful connection between inflammation severity and improvement rates. Conclusion and Suggestions; Endoscopic sinus surgery makes a significant improvement in symptoms on patients with nasal polyposis. Although relapses and severe illness is more common with patients with high eosinophil rates, there is no connection between general mucosal inflammation severity and patients' general life quality.
