An analysis of the Turkish translation of Naguib Mahfouzʼs el-Liss veʼl-Kilâb / The Thief and The Dogs in the context of the transmission of cultural elements

This study examines the transfer of cultural elements in the Turkish translations of Naguib Mahfouz's The Thief and the Dogs (el-Lıss we al-Kilab). It explores how cultural elements in the original text are conveyed during the translation process and in what context this transfer occurs. By analyzing cultural differences and similarities between Arabic-Turkish and Arabic-English -Turkish translations, the study provides an understanding of how translation contributes to preserving and comprehending cultural richness. While addressing cultural transfer and the Turkish translations of Naguib Mahfouz's works, the study emphasizes the literary and cultural significance of the translation process, particularly in examining cultural transfer in the Turkish translation of The Thief and the Dogs. The study compares the original text with the translated texts, focusing on how cultural elements are interpreted and expressed. Attention is given to the effectiveness of strategies used during the analysis and the harmony of cultural elements in the target language. The aim is to develop a deeper understanding of cultural transfer in literary translation. The findings demonstrate how effectively language is used in the translations and how the cultural richness of the original text is preserved or altered. Moreover, this study provides insights into the literary and cultural contributions of the translation process in the context of Naguib Mahfouz's works being translated into Turkish.
