The setting in the stories of Necip Fazıl Kısakürek

Necip Fazıl Kısakürek is a versatile writer who has left a profound mark on Turkish intellectual and artistic life, producing works in almost every field of literature. As a writer, poet, thinker, magazine editor, playwright and storyteller, he has produced an impressive body of work on both an individual and societal level. The author's short stories, published in various media over the years, were eventually compiled in a book entitled Hikâyelerim (My Stories). These stories exemplify the narrative style of event and situation storytelling. In addition, some stories, which are structured as dialogues, are woven more around the author's messages than around events. Story characters in works are found in two opposing directions. Opposite characters who are pessimistic, unhappy, alienated, and dependent, there are people who are satisfied with their place and position and have achieved their goals in life. The fundamental point in the formation of this difference is the extent to which religion permeates a person's life. The reflections of this psychological background become meaningful together with the setting. In works where the author uses symbolic language quite intensively, the character's journey also influences the perception of the setting. Settings such as hotels, wooden houses, cemeteries, cities, and hospitals are constructed as scenes for the internal conflicts experienced by the characters. Necip Fazıl's symbolic narrative language transforms these spaces from mere decorative elements into metaphors that shape the characters' perception. Space, with its environmental and perceptual dimensions, determines the meaning map of the story. This thesis examines the use of space in Necip Fazıl Kısakürek's stories at the perceptual and environmental levels. The characters' memories deepen the meanings they attach to space, while physical environmental elements prepare the ground for symbolic interpretations. The environmental function of space in the stories, in addition to completing the decorative function in the fictional context, can be a source for the social life elements of the story periods. The perceptual function of space, on the other hand, finds its place as psychologically based emotional reflections through the participation of the characters' memory spaces. Thus, space becomes a building block that shapes the stories by forming both the internal and external dimensions of the narrative.
