A linguistic examination on the Divan of Nedim

The material of literature is language, and the use of language in literary works is different from the use in everyday language and has some stylistic features. In order for the style of literary works or literati to be determined fully and systematically, language features should be revealed. In this context, Classical Turkish literature texts have so far been examined in various traditional or modern methods; however, there seems to exist almost no study conducted with the linguistic analysis approach revealing Nedim's poetics. In the XVIIIth century, Nedîm broke new ground in Classical Turkish poetry with the admirable artistic value of his poems and his unique Nedîmane style in operation. He is not only a poet but also a language theorist with the original characteristics of his time. Despite the time that has passed, these features that make Nedim's poems understandable and add vitality should be sought in the Turkish he used. Historical, cultural, social and linguistic explanations need to be made in order for the structure of the language to be fully understood, and for the value of this style, which exists as Nedîmâne Style in the literature, to be revealed properly. In this thesis, the richness of connotation revealed by Nedîm in his poems will be handled with linguistic methods, and the language and stylistic features in his poems will be determined. Linguistic analysis aims to reveal the aesthetic value of the text by associating the text and the language as a whole. For this purpose, it uses the methods of stylistics, which is the subtitle of linguistics. In this context, descriptive and monotheistic style (tekevvünî üslûp) analysis methods will be used in the study. Thus, the new and original aspects of Nedim's poems in our classical poetry will be determined, and the justification of Nedim's rightful fame, which is reflected not only in his own period but also centuries later, will be revealed.
