Self-esteem, body image and related factors in individuals who will have nevus excision

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted cross-sectionally to determine self-esteem, body image and related factors in individuals who will undergo nevus excision. The research was conducted by applying a survey to individuals who applied to the plastic and reconstructive surgery outpatient clinic between 01.08.2023 and 01.07.2023 in a state hospital of a province and who were going to have nevus excision. The sample of the study consisted of 300 patients who met the study conditions. Personal Data Collection Form, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RBSS), Body Image Scale (BIS), Brief Symptom Inventory Scale (BSSE) were used to collect data in the study. Data were collected face to face with individuals who agreed to participate in the study. SPSS 25.0 program was used to evaluate the data. Descriptive statistics, Shapirowilk, Kolmogorovsmirnov, t-test in independent groups, One Way Anova Analysis and Post-Hoc tests (Tukey HSD) and Tamhane's, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis Variance test, Bonferroni, Pearson and Sperman Correlation analysis. , regression analysis was performed. For statistical significance, p<0.05 was adopted. It was determined that 59.1% of the individuals were 35 years old and under, 29.7% were housewives, 58.3% had an income equal to their expenses, and 41.3% were university graduates. Accordingly, 50.0% of the participants had the procedure done due to health problems, 99.8% had difficulty in making the decision for the procedure, 61.2% felt better after the procedure than before, and 79.3% had an organ they did not like. It was determined that 16% wanted to change their nose and 57.7% did not consider any other procedure later. It was determined that the total mean score of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was 17.87±4.33 and the total mean score of the Body Image Scale was 79.04±25.52. In the study, the participants' total mean score of the Brief Symptom Inventory was 41.99±34.95 and its sub-dimensions were 9.19±9.46 for Anxiety, 10.96±9.65 for Depression, 8.72±8.54 for Negative Self, and Somatization. It was found to be 6.18±5.61 for and 6.93±5.46 for Anger. The result is that among individuals applying for nevus excision, those coming for health purposes; It was determined that women's Body Image Scale mean scores were statistically significantly higher than men. It has been found that as education level increases, body image increases and psychiatric symptoms also increase. It has been determined that the self-esteem of individuals who will undergo nevus excision for aesthetics increases with the level of education. It has been determined that psychiatric symptoms are more common in individuals with low self-esteem. However, it has been found that women have higher psychiatric symptoms than men.
