Özet (EN)
The street, as an integral facet of public space, assumes significance as a multifaceted environment characterized by diverse streetscapes and a network of social relationships. It is envisaged as an open, inclusive, and accessible space for all that transcends its function of facilitating movement from one point to another. This study acknowledges the role of key elements, including the sensorial constituents, alongside trees, street furniture, and lighting poles, inherent to the street, in shaping, altering, and transforming streetscapes and fostering social connections. A pivotal aspect considered in this thesis is the reimagining of the street as a workspace, influencing the emergence of sensory components integral to the existing streetscapes. Through an in-depth examination focusing on the Nişantaşı region as a case study, involving repeated observations and supplementing insights with literature reviews and document analyses, this research explores the profound effects of street vendors on the streetscape. The occupation of public space by street vendors, encompassing their spatial positioning on building facades, working methodologies, and the array of utilitarian objects employed (stalls, umbrellas, flower pots, carts, etc.), collectively contributes to the configuration of streetscapes. This study scrutinizes the sensory and physical components such as the sound and smell environments, textures, colors, and temperature differences caused by street vendor activities. These sensory dimensions not only physically alter the street's character but also exert a profound psychological impact on its users, reflecting the intricate interplay between sensory components and human psychology. However, the thesis didn't resolve this interaction. Positioned as a microcosm reflecting the developments in Istanbul, Nişantaşı, which is also used as both a residential and commercial district, has provided a ground for observing the different interactions. Nişantaşı is also has dynamic streetscapes, where the tradition of street vending- which reflecting the history of Istanbul- is maintained. This investigation aims to unravel the intricate relationship between the constituent elements shaping streetscapes and their consequential impact on the public nature of the street.
