Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of three different decontamination procedures on shear bond strength of a universal adhesive system to contaminated/noncontaminated dentin. One hundred and eighty dentin samples were prepared from extracted bovine incisors and randomly divided into 12 groups (n=15). Three different contamination (blood and/or hemostatic agent) and decontamination procedures (water rinsing, 35% phosphoric-acid or 10% gallic-acid application after rinsing) were incorporated into study design and groups were formed as follows: GrS: No contamination/rinsing GrF: No contamination/35% phosphoric-acid application after rinsing GrG: No contamination/10% gallic-acid application after rinsing GrKS: Blood contamination/rinsing GrKF: Blood contamination/35% phosphoric-acid application after rinsing GrKG: Blood contamination/10% gallic-acid application after rinsing GrHS: Hemostatic agent contamination/rinsing GrHF: Hemostatic agent contamination/35% phosphoric-acid application after rinsing GrHG: Hemostatic agent contamination/10% gallic-acid application after rinsing GrKHS: Blood+Hemostatic agent contamination/rinsing GrKHF: Blood+Hemostatic agent contamination/35% phosphoric-acid application after rinsing GrKHG: Blood+Hemostatic agent contamination/10% gallic-acid application after rinsing After application of the related contamination/decontamination procedures, composite resin restorations were completed and the samples were subjected to thermal cycling procedure. Shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Failure modes were evaluated under a stereomicroscope at X20 magnification. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25 with ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey HSD tests at 0.05 significance level. Statistically significant the highest and the lowest SBS values were obtained in GrG and GrKHF, respectively. Groups were ranked from the highest to the lowest SBS value in that order: GrG=21.98±2.78; GrHG=20.15±3.14; GrKG=19.21±2.93; GrKHG=17.37±2.02; GrS=16.54±2.09; GrF=13.37±2.90; GrKF=11.73±2.70; GrKS=11.67±2.73; GrKHS=11.59±2.95; GrHS=11.02±3.40; GrHF=8.23±2.56 ve GrKHF=7.72±2.08. Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that 10% gallic-acid application after rinsing provided higher SBS values compared to 35% phosphoric-acid application under both contaminated and non-contaminated conditions (p<0,05).
