The phlebitis and infiltration development and effecti̇ng factors in pati̇ents inserted peri̇pheral intravenous catheter in neurosurgery clinic

This study is a descriptive and cross sectional study that aims to examine the phlebitis and infiltration development and effecting factors in patients inserted peripheral intravenous catheter in neurosurgery clinic. The data of the research was collected with questionnaire and observation form by evaluating the inserting site each 24 hours in terms of phlebitis and infiltrations. The sample of the study was composed of 347 catheters and 325 patients who was 18 years or above and hospitalized in the Neurosurgery Department, receiving medical and fluid treatment through peripheral catheter. Phlebitis development rate was 17.6%. All of the phlebits (100%) developed were phlebitis in the 1st degree and the majority of phlebits (60.7%) developed on the 2nd day. The development of phlebitis was affected by the current disease, replacement place, duration of the catheter in the vessel, the application frequency of catheter to the area, and the educational level of the person applying catheter. Infiltration development rate was 6.3%. All of the infiltrations (100%) developed were infiltrations in the 1st degree and the majority of infiltrations (81.8%) developed on the 2nd day. As a result, it is recommended for nurses and researchers to evaluate the peripheral IV catheters regularly through phlebitis and infiltration scale, replacement of the peripheral IV cathetersafter a maximum of a 48-72 hour period, avoiding the repeated use of application areas, realizing the phlebitis and infiltration risk in advancing age groups and taking necessary precauitions and planning studies for determining phlebitis and infiltration risk factors.
