Abstract (EN)

This thesis aims to examine the strategic policies of Nureddin Mahmud Zengi, a significant figure in the political structure of the Middle East during the late 12th and early 13th centuries, towards Damascus. Nureddin Zengi was a leader known for his successful military campaigns against the Crusaders. However, his conquest of Damascus was a turning point that changed the regional balance and constituted an important milestone on his path to establishing dominance in the Islamic world. This study aims to analyze Zengi's military, diplomatic, and administrative policies toward Damascus. This study will analyze Zengi's military, diplomatic, and administrative policies toward Damascus, investigating how these strategies played a role in both strengthening his position in the regional power struggle and securing his success in the long-term struggle against the Crusaders. Nureddin Zengi's policy toward Damascus was shaped by the interaction of both internal and external factors. Relations with various states and principalities in the Islamic world, calls for unity against the Crusaders, and shifts in the regional balance of power were fundamental elements of Zengi's diplomatic strategy. In particular, Damascus' strategic location and wealth accelerated Zengi's decision to conquer Damascus, and the difficulties he encountered in this process provided him with significant administrative and diplomatic experience. The thesis will examine in detail Nureddin Zengi's process of capturing Damascus, his major wars against the Crusaders, and the political atmosphere of the period. It will also discuss the administrative policies he implemented in Damascus, his relations with the local population, and his efforts to transform the social structure of the city. This study aims to highlight the importance of Zengi's military and diplomatic successes in establishing central authority in the Islamic world and gaining strategic superiority over the Crusaders. In conclusion, Nureddin Mahmud Zengi's Damascus policy will be evaluated not only as an effort to conquer and establish sovereignty, but also as a profound strategy that shaped the historical and cultural structures of the Middle East. This study will analyze how Zengi's diplomatic skills and military tactics came together with the process of capturing Damascus and how they affected the future of the Islamic world during this period.
