Abstract (EN)
In this thesis, I tried to examine ?the sense of belonging? in Nuri Bilge Ceylan?s cinematography which includes his innermost concerns: ?urban? and ?provincial? life, since his approach to these two domains reflects the dissociation of sensibility in his films. My first aim in this project is to examine Ceylan?s treatment of his characters who remained partly provincial and could not manage to become wholly urban. Another subject of the thesis is the depiction of changes in urban and provincial life in Turkey from the point of view of Ceylan?s films. In her book named Kör Ayna Kayıp Şark , Nurdan Gürbilek claims that the conflict of oriental and occidental values was the most significant problem depicted in Modern Turkish Literature. Gürbilek also claims that real success and creativity of modern Turkish authors depends on their treatment of the contradictions and hesitations of their main characters. This is exactly what Ceylan tries to do in his films. In short, I have tried to point out that in Nuri Bilge Ceylan?s films there is no affirmation or condemnation of either urban or provincial ways of life, but a critical exposition in cinematographic terms the dilemna and anxiety of being alienated from both these environments.
