The effects of urban transformation on the sense of place in nusaybin (Mardin)

Especially, the increase in migration to cities with industrialization has caused rapid change in cities. As a result of the uncontrolled increasing population, housing problems, crooked cities and infrastructure deficiencies have emerged. New urban areas were targeted against the housing problem within the scope of urban planning developed to solve these problems that make the living conditions of the society difficult, but then urban transformation was implemented. Although large-scale urban transformation practices in Turkey, which is experiencing a rapid urbanization process, have manifested itself with the improvement of slum areas, the legal bases introduced after the 2000s have accelerated the urban transformation process. Urban transformation practices bring not only physical but also social changes with their multidimensional effect. In particular, it is impossible not to be affected by the sense of place, which is the focus of the study and a phenomenon that develops with the interaction of space-human. After all, the sense of place consists of the experiences, relationships and feelings of the individual about the place in which he lives. In line with the Law on Transformation of Areas Under Disaster Risk No. 6306, the effect of urban transformation on the sense of place in the urban transformation areas of Nusaybin has been the focus of this study. By using quantitative and partially qualitative methods, the opinions of 260 participants aged 18 and over were obtained through a semi-structured questionnaire containing questions about the urban transformation project and the sub-dimensions of the sense of place. The obtained data were evaluated with frequency (f) and percentage (%) analysis in SPSS program. As a result, with the urban transformation process, the sense of place of the old neighborhood residents has changed and negative feelings towards the area have developed. However, according to the changes in the perception of place, the commitment of the participants to their families, city and people, respectively, was higher. While almost half of the participants have a place identity, half of them have not yet developed. It has been concluded that the participants have a strong place attachment, but they want to live in the area for a long time if the current conditions are improved. It has been determined that the participants, who have high social interaction opportunities in terms of place dependencedevelop a negative dependence on the area and mostly prefer to live in a better place than the transformation area.
