The effect of nutrition and behavioral attitude changes on biochemical parameters before and after bariatric surgery in obese individuals

In this study, which was conducted to observe how the nutritional and behavioral attitudes occurring one month after the surgery affect the short-term biochemical parameters of patients undergoing bariatric surgery, the "nutrition and behavioral attitude scale in bariatric surgery patients" was applied to individuals aged 18-64 years who had undergone bariatric surgery, preoperatively and 1 month after the operation, and biochemical parameters were requested before and 1 and 6 month after the operation. The research was carried out as a prospective study on 39 individuals who applied to Samsun Anadolu Hospital General Surgery clinic between 16.02.2021-24.09.2021 for bariatric surgery. Shapiro-Wilk, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Anderson-Darling tests, Paired test, Wilcoxontest, Mcnamer test, McNemar-Bowker test, Friedman (Repeated Measures ANOVA (Non-parametric)) test and Durbin-Conover test were used in statistical analysis; the significance level was taken into account as 0.05 (p-value) in the analyzes. Fasting glucose, ALT, AST, CRP, creatinine, TSH, B12, calcium and iron levels of the patients were evaluated. Although there is no significant difference in the nutritional behaviors of obese individuals, it has been determined that there are positive changes in glucose (hunger), ALT, creatinine, CRP and TSH levels due to changes such as the number of meals and water consumption caused by the surgery, but there is no significant change in AST, B12, calcium and iron levels. As a result, as advocated in the literature, it was determined that the nutritional and behavioral changes that had to be made within the first month due to surgery had positive effects on biochemical parameters. As a result, as advocated in the literature for long-term (3,6,12 months) follow-up, it was determined that the effects on biochemical parameters were positive with the changes in nutrition and behavioral attitude observed in the first 6 month.
