Abstract (EN)

aim: The release of inflammatory cytokines by adipose tissue is associated with the development of metabolic syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. In this study, we aimed to determine the role and importance of inflammatory processes in the development of obesity, Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Method: 160 participants were included in the study. Participants were classified using body mass index, NCEP-ATP III and IDF Metabolic Syndrome and ADA diabetes diagnostic criteria. CRP, IL-6, TNF-alpha levels, leukocyte and subgroup counts were used to evaluate inflammatory processes. All data were analyzed using SPSS package program. Results: In our study, CRP and IL-6 values were higher in obese patients compared to the control group and positively correlated with BMI, weight, waist circumference, triglyceride and HOMA-IR. Leukocyte counts and all leukocyte subgroups except eosinophils were higher in obese patients compared to the control group; in the control group, leukocyte, lymphocyte and basophil counts were lower according to the Obese+MetS group; leukocyte, neutrophil, monocyte and eosinophil counts were lower according to the obese group. Leukocyte levels were positively correlated with weight, BMI, waist circumference, glucose, TG, HbA1c and HOMA-IR values and negatively correlated with HDL-C levels. When the volunteers were grouped according to IDF criteria, CRP and IL-6 levels were highest in the Obese+T2DM group. There was a significant difference between the control group and the Obese+T2DM group in terms of CRP levels. Conclusion: Our data support that inflammatory parameters may be an indicator in the development of obesity, MetS and T2DM. It is thought that it may be important to examine these parameters especially in newly diagnosed patient groups. Key Words: Obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus, inflammation, CRP, IL-6, TNF-α, leukocytes and their subgroups
