Abstract (EN)
Purpose: In this study we aimed to evaluate changes in energy metabolism before and after positive airway pressure (PAP) treatment in patient with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS).Method: Study was conducted among a sample of 39 patients who are above 18 years old. Patients assigned to CPAP treatment in moderate-severe OSAS diagnosed by PSG. Before and after CPAP treatment energy metabolism were recorded with Metabolic Holter Device (Pro3 SenseWear Armband, SWA).Results: In this study the sample was composed of 39 OSAS patients who are 51,53± 11,16 of age (F/M:17/22). 15 patients (38.46%) treated with BPAP, 24 (61.54%) of patients was treated with CPAP. Results of Metabolic Holter Device;1-Patients daily total energy consumption before treatment 482,44 ± 296 kcal / day, after treatment 524,51 ± 343,18 kCal / day (p<000).2-Patients daily physical activity (daily walking distance, the total number of steps) before treatment 7867 ± 3319 steps / day, after treatment 12 416 ± 1451 steps / day (p<000).3-Total daily rest period of patients (immobilization, reaching a total amount of sleep time) before treatment 7.90 ± 1.36 hours / day, after treatment 7,44 ±1,42 hours / day (p<000).4-Patients daily total sleep time before treatment 5,50 ± 1,88 hours / day, after treatment 5,87 ± 1,20 hours / day (p<000).Discussion: This study demonstrate that daily energy consumption is increasing with PAP treatment. Thus, diseases such as obesity, DM, HT can be controlled by PAP treatment. PAP treatment also provides effective sleep and sleep neurophysiology. Thus duration of sleep time decreases and daily physical activity time increases. As a consequence of this patients compliance with treatment increases. As a result, PAP treatment should be used by each OSAS patients and patients should be encouraged to PAP treatment. Keywords: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome, Metabolic Holter Device, PAP Treatment
