Abstract (EN)

Aim: The aim of this study is, to define demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics, and investigate the natural history, prognosis and factors affecting the prognosis of egg allergy of the patients followed up with the diagnosis of IgE-mediated egg white and egg yolk allergy at Pediatric Immunology and Allergy Diseases outpatient clinic of KTU Faculty of Medicine. Method: All patients who were diagnosed with IgE-mediated egg white and egg yolk allergy in the Pediatric Immunology and Allergy Diseases Polyclinic of KTU Faculty of Medicine between January 2009 and January 2019 and recorded in digital media were included in the study. The patients were called by phone and the pre-prepared questionnaire questions were asked to the parents of the patients and recorded. Results were compared between sex, disease groups, and tolerance and non-tolerance groups. Results: Our study included 136 patients (76 [55.9%] boys, 60 [44.1%] girls) with a mean age (months±SD) of 86.7 ± 44.9 (1.0-267.0) months. After egg consumption, 122 (89.7%) of the patients were skin/mucosa, 52 (38.2%) upper respiratory tract, 41 (31.3%) gastrointestinal, 31 (22.8%) lower respiratory tract, 18 (13.2%) laryngeal signs and symptoms were reported in patients. Anaphylaxis was present in 95 patients (69.8%). Other foods with the highest sensitivity were cow's milk (68.0%) and hazelnut (31.9%). Tolerance to at least one cooking method developed in 105 patients (77.2%). The number of patients who could consume all 4 types of cooking was 24 (22.8%). There was no statistically significant difference in terms of gender, week of birth, birth weight, duration of breast milk intake, and initiation of complementary foods in patients with and without tolerance. Conclusion: Tolerance develops in approximately ¾ of patients up to 3 years of age. It has been revealed that the age at which the symptoms first appear and the late diagnosis age have an effect on the development of tolerance.
