Professional burnout, leadership styles and organizational culture relationship according to teacher perceptions

A person can be characterized as a psychological being in the context of emotions and thoughts, and a social being in the context of the environment in which he interacts. Therefore, the basis of evaluating a person as a complex being can also be considered as the fact that a person forms a whole from a psychological and social point of view. In this direction, in order to understand a person and respond to his expectations, it can be said that it is important to first realize that a person has a complex nature. So that awareness of this situation can allow a person to achieve the desired efficiency by ensuring that he correctly channels his motivation, desire, interest and attention to the goal in all aspects of life. In general, given that most of the day is spent in the working environment, it can be considered that the leadership style, behavior and attitude of managers at work, as well as the work environment and culture in its entirety, have a large impact on the individual. It can be said that the sense of burnout experienced by individuals can also develop in connection with the environment in which they interact. It can be argued that it is a necessity to examine the relationship between professional burnout with leadership styles, various variables and organizational culture in order to take measures against individual and organizational problems and understand the conditions that cause burnout. The aim of this study is to examine whether there is a relationship between professional burnout, leadership styles and organizational culture according to different variables according to the perceptions of teachers working in primary and secondary schools. This study consists of teachers working at the primary and secondary levels of Central Public Schools located in Kastamonu and Bartın provinces under the Ministry of Education in the 2018-2019 academic year. From Kastamonu province, a total of 293 people, 190 women, 103 male teachers, who worked in secondary schools, a total of 272 people, 188 women and 84 male teachers, who worked in primary schools participated in our research based on volunteering. From Bartın province, a total of 190 people, 105 of whom were women, 85 of whom were male teachers attended from secondary schools and a total of 126 people attended in primary schools 70 of whom were women, and 56 of whom were male teachers. A total of 881 people, including 565 from Kastamonu and 316 from Bartın province, participated in our research. As data collection tools in our research; a personal information questionnaire, developed by Maslach and Jackson (1981) and later edited by Maslach, Jackson and Schwab, İnce and Şahin's (2015) Turkish adaptation of "Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Form", developed by Bass and Avolio (1985) and Korkmaz (2005) adapted to Turkish culture by Turkish education system, "Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ)," and developed by the Terzi (2005), the "School Culture Scale" was used. The data obtained from the research was analyzed using the SPSS package program. As a result of this research, there was a significant relationship between professional burnout with leadership styles and organizational culture; school principals' behaviors exhibited towards leadership styles and organizational culture has an impact observed on teachers emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a decrease in the feeling of personal achievement.
