Abstract (EN)

In this research, which covers all the fictional studies of Oğuz Atay, the theme of personality fragmentation; The psychodynamic theory of personality has been studied in the light of some philosophers and modernist literary approaches who have guided the 20th century with their philosophical views. The problem of our study, Atay's fictional world, the disintegration of the hero's personality came around to determine if the protagonists that led to the breakup of what are the effects for individual and social fragmentation, the dimension of Westernization and modernization in Turkey that there was gaining momentum in the Republican era of social, political, economic, philosophical, psychological, and taking into account the changes in the cultural field to investigate. The aim of our study is to reveal the concept of fragmentation both in content and in terms of form by discussing Atay's disintegration of personality from being theoretical, how he embodies the issue on a literary plane, what kind of features he looks for in the personality of the heroes, what direction they lean towards, what individual and social factors lead the heroes to personality fragmentation, within a theoretical framework. Determining the problem of the Turkish novel as "personality", Atay takes an individual-centered approach instead of the socialist perspective of the period. Themes which has an important place in Atay's fictional world, such as East-West, being in limbo, Turkey's underdevelopment, modernization, power and authority, deadlocks in the bureaucracy, father- son relationship, disruptions in the education system from primary school to university, social value judgments, marriage, are listed as obstacles in front of the personality of the heroes who reckon with themselves to reach their self, and all these problems are knotted in the theme of personality fragmentation. In addition to these external effects, the individual characteristics and intellectual identities of the heroes also cause personality fragmentation. For the heroes who are in constant conflict between these two worlds, personality fragmentation is an inevitable end. In order to show the dimensions of the fragmentation in the individual, Atay, who tells the inner world of them through a psychological analysis, uses techniques that reflect the fragmentation in his works in terms of form as well as content. Keywords: personality, disintegration, self, modernization, unreliable narrator
