Opinions and experiences of COPD patients using oxygen concentrators regarding the disease and the device

This study was conducted in the province of Tokat to determine the opinions and experiences of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) who use oxygen concentrators regarding the disease and the device. The study employed a qualitative research method. The sample consisted of COPD patients who met the inclusion criteria and were selected using criterion sampling. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted using the COPD patient interview technique. Patients who answered "yes" to this question were asked whether they used an oxygen concentrator. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted using a Semi-Structured Interview Form. Data saturation was achieved with 15 COPD patients using oxygen concentrators through interviews. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) was used throughout the study. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. Three main themes emerged from the analyses: opinions and experiences related to COPD, opinions and experiences related to the device, and future needs of COPD patients. This study determined that COPD patients using oxygen concentrators experience various symptom-related challenges and report both positive and negative experiences with the device. Additionally, future care and social support needs were identified. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that COPD patients be provided with holistic care and support. Considering that oxygen devices have become an integral part of patients' lives, devices should be provided that are weighted and sized to ensure patient comfort and activities are comfortable and do not restrict daily activities.
