Investigation of sports participation motivations and achievement motivations of high school students participating in school sports (Gaziantep province sample)

The aim of this paper is to investigate sports participation motivations and achievement motivations of participation of high school students in school sports in terms of gender, age, school branch, sport type and income level variables. A total of 241 students (148 boys, 93 girls) participated in this study voluntarily. Motivation of sports participation and sport-specific achievement motivation measurement were applied to the students who participated in the study and SPSS program was used for statistical analysis. Normality tests of the data were carried out using Shapiro-Wilk tests. The independent samples T Test and ANOVA test were used for the data showing normal distribution, for the non-normal distribution data were used the Mann Whitney-U test and Kruskal Wallis test for α=0,05 significance level. According to the results obtained from the motivation to participate in sport measurement, team membership/spirit, gender and team/spirit sub-dimensions according to school branch, team membership/spirit sub-dimension according to sport type, team membership/spirit sub-dimension according to sport type was significant (p<0.05), the difference was significant in the other sub-dimensions (p>0.05). The results obtained from the sport-specific success motivation measurement showed that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the motivation to approach success according to gender, in the avoidance motive sub-dimension according to age, and in the avoidance motive sub-dimension according to income level (p>0.05).
