Ömer Ferit Kam's understanding of religion and philosophy

This thesis aims to examine the religious and philosophical understanding of Ömer Ferit Kam, one of the prominent intellectuals of the Second Constitutional Era, within its historical, intellectual, and conceptual contexts. The study seeks to reveal the intellectual foundations that shaped Kam's philosophical inclinations and religious perspectives by considering the socio-political atmosphere of the period. In this framework, Kam's works are analyzed in the context of the liberal environment brought by the Second Constitutional Era, the ideological movements, and the philosophical debates of the time. In the first chapter of the thesis, the socio-political and intellectual environment of the Second Constitutional Era is discussed, and the life and literary personality of Ömer Ferit Kam are introduced. The second chapter evaluates Kam's contributions to Islamic thought, his approach to the balance between reason and revelation, freedom of belief and worship, and religious pluralism. The third chapter explores his philosophical understanding through subtopics such as metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, and moral philosophy, with a particular focus on his approach to the relationship between religion and philosophy. It has been determined that Ömer Ferit Kam adopts a synthesizing attitude in both religious and philosophical fields, and that he endeavors to reconcile Islamic thought with modern issues. In this regard, Kam is considered an original figure who made significant contributions both to the intellectual climate of his time and to contemporary philosophical discourse.
