Reform in Ömer Nasuhi Bilmen's kalam thought

Abstract (EN)

Ömer Nasuhi Bilmen, a recent era scholar who witnessed the transition period to the Republic and held important positions during this period, wrote works on various fields, notably Islamic law. Ömer Nasuhi Bilmen is one of the significant scholars of the period who wrote works and articles on the New Ilm al-Kalam field. In this study, which of the New Ilm al-Kalam issues, how and what extent Bilmen dealt with them is revealed. Besides, the attitude he has put forward against the controversial issues, new religious movements, and the claims and criticisms made against Islam, which have been on the agenda both in the West and in the Islamic world, are discussed in respect of quality and method. At the same time, the views of various scholars of the period who dealt with the New Ilm al-Kalam issues were mentioned and compared with the comments of Bilmen. In the introduction part, the life of Ömer Nasuhi Bilmen, his scientific personality, and works are discussed, and some anecdotes are included in terms of revealing the sociopolitical situation of the period he lived. In the first part, his perspective on the idea of reform within the framework of classical theological subjects is presented in the context of theology, prophethood, and the hereafter. In the second part, his approach to the issues of the New Ilm al-Kalam period and the way he deals with these issues are evaluated.
