Examination of the relationship between missed nursing care and compassionate care perceptions of oncology patients

This study was conducted in a descriptive and correlational design in order to examine the relationship between oncology patients' perceptions of missed nursing care and compassionate care. The population of the study was the patients hospitalized in the oncology unit of Karadeniz Technical University Health Application and Research Center Farabi Hospital; The sample consisted of 290 patients who met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate in the study. "Patient Information Form", "MISSCARE Survey -Patient" and Turkish version of "5-Item Compassion Scale" were used to collect data. The research data were collected between July 2024 and June 2025 from patients who met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate in the study after obtaining institutional permissions and ethics committee approval. Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests, Mann Whitney U test, Independent Two-Sample T test, Kruskal Wallis H test, one-way analysis of variance, Spearman's Rho correlation, Robust regression analysis, mean, standard deviation, median frequency and percentage were used in the analysis of the data. It was determined that the mean score of the missed nursing care perception was 2.11±0.52 and the mean score of the compassion perception was 3.41±0.74. It was found that there was a statistically significant, negative, moderate relationship between missed nursing care and perceived compassion (r=-0.592; p<0.001) and that missed nursing care significantly affected perceived compassion (p<0.001; R ²; %39.57). As a result, it was determined that the level of perceived compassion decreased as the level of missed nursing care increased in patients.
