The comfort level of the oncology patients

Abstract (EN)

This study was carried out as descriptive in order to evaluate of the comfort level in oncology patients. The population of this study consisted of patients undergoing chemotherapy in outpatient chemotherapy unit at the Karadeniz Technical University Faculty of Medicine Farabi Hospital between 3 August-3 November 2015. The sample of the study consisted of 213 patients who meets the research acceptance criteria were reached. The data were collected with face to face interviews by using the "Patient Information Form" and "General Comfort Scale." In the evalution of data were used frequency, percentage, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis H test and post hoc Dunnett T3 tests. In the study, it was determined that the total General Comfort Scale score of patients is 140.63±16.86; the average score is 2.93±0.35. The mean score of physical sub-dimension of patients is 34.80±5.33; mean score of psychospiritual sub-dimension is 39.72±5.87; mean score of environmental sub-dimension is 35.58±6.45; mean score of sociocultural sub-dimension is 30.53±3.56; the mean score of relief level of comfort is 47.39±5.92; the mean score of the ease level of comfort is 49.57±6.85; the mean score of the transcendence level of comfort is 43.67±6.28. In the study, it was determined that the overall comfort level of the patient was affected by gender, age and profession (p<0.05). It was found a significant difference between mean score of physical transcendence sub-dimension of General Comfort Scale and genito urinary system cancers; between psychospiritual relief subscale sub-dimension and the number of cycles of chemotherapy (p<0.05). In addition to it was determined a significant difference between "definition of comfort regarding to the patients", "conditions of able to increase the comfort level" and mean score of General Comfort Scale (p <0.05). In accordance with the results obtained from the study, the suggestions were given to improve the comfort level of oncology patients by the researcher.
