Abstract (EN)

Increasing energy demand and harmful emissions from primary energy sources are the most important problems for environmental sustainability. If energy policies do not change, this problem is poised to create dramatic problems in the future. Energy mix is one of the crucial decisions to take into consideration in controlling environmental e ffects of primary energy sources. A careful design of energy mix gives the opportunity to consider sustainability indicators and cost of diff erent energy sources. In this thesis, we analyse the power generation systems considering CO2;NOx; and SO2 emissions, energy demand projections into the future and cost estimates for the primary energy sources. We consider seven di fferent energy sources; oil, natural gas, coal & lignite, wind, solar, geothermal and hydro energy. The optimization model is formulated as a Multi-Objective Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MOMILP) problem. We consider two main objectives: cost and GHG emissions under demand and budget constraints. The resulting bi-objective optimization model is solved using the epsilon-constraint optimization method. The solution of the model suggests which energy sources, when and where should be built over a long term planning horizon and whether shifting the fuel to natural gas in a coal power plant is a right move in terms of cost and emission objectives. The Turkish power generation system provides a real case study to test our model empirically. A sensitivity analysis is performed to determine how the optimum solution is sensitive to a change in one of the parameters assigned for real life application. The effect of wind turbine power coe fficient, investment level, natural gas prices are examined within the scope of sensitivity analysis.
