The level of relation between competition and parental attitude considering high school students

The major main of this study is to investigate the relationship between high school students? competition attitude and Parental attitude classified as Democratic, Protective/Demanding and Authoritarian.The sample of this research consists of 382 students; 167 boys and 215 girls who were randomly chosen from Ürgüp Anatolian High School, Hayri Mehmet Ürgüplü Anatolian High School and Ürgüp Anatolian Education High School in Ürgüp.?Competitive Attitude Scale? developed by Akbayırlı Bilbey, 1998 and ?Parents Attitude Inventories? developed by Eldeleklioğlu, 1996 and ?Personal Information Poll? for the measuring variety of student? s gender, kind of high school, mother? s education level, father?s education level and the socioeconomic level are used for collecting data.The results are as follows; a positive correlation is seen between the students? competitive attitude and parental attitude both democratic and protective/demanding (These correlations are significant at the level of 0.01 but not very strong). As a result of the research, no difference is found statisticaly between the students who have authoritarian parental attitude and competitive attitude. And; competitive attitude doesn?t change according to the variable of the students? gender, the type of school , mother ?father education level, mother?s ?father?s job and the economic level. The study shows that; parental attitude does not change according to the variable of the students? gender and the type of school.It?s been found that the mothers graduated from secondary or high schools are more protective/demanding than mothers graduated from primary schools, additionally the students whose fathers graduated from university show more protective/demanding attitudes than the ones whose fathers have graduated from primary education schools. When we take the democratic parental attitudes in consideration the education level of the parents doesn?t make any difference. No significant difference is to be found between parental attitude and mother?s job. But the students whose fathers are government officials are more protective/demanding than the ones whose fathers are tradesmen. Thus no significant difference is observed between democratic and authoritarian parental attitude and father?s job. Furthermore there is no significant difference between democratic parental attitude and the socio-economic level. Also the ones who have middle socio-economic level show more protective/demanding and authoritarian parental attitudes than the ones who have lower socio-economic level.
