Hopelessness and academic resilience as predictors of academic procrastination in high school students

Academic procrastination is a prevalent issue among secondary school students, significantly impacting their academic performance. It is suggested that students' sentiments of hopelessness and their level of academic resilience play integral roles in the manifestation of academic procrastination. From this point, the present study aims to explore the predictive value of hopelessness and academic resilience in determining academic procrastination in secondary school students. The research sample comprised 625 students, 337 female (53,9%) and 288 male (46,1%), who attended diverse secondary educational institutions in Kütahya during the 2023-2024 academic year. The participants ranged in age from 13 to 18, with a mean age of 15,52 and a standard deviation of 1,13. In this research, the Academic Procrastination Scale was utilized to assess the academic procrastination tendencies among secondary school students. The Beck Hopelessness Scale was employed to evaluate their levels of hopelessness, while the Academic Resilience Scale served to measure their academic resilience. Concurrently, a "Demographic Information Form" was administered to obtain demographic data pertaining to the students. The data collected were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis methods with the aid of IBM SPSS 27.0 package program. The research data was analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression methods to determine the extent to which hopelessness and academic resilience variables predict academic procrastination among secondary school students in a statistically significant manner. The study findings indicate that the independent variables explained 17,3% of the variance in the dependent variable. Academic resilience did not emerge as a predictor of academic procrastination, while hopelessness exhibited significance as a predictor. The study's outcomes are discussed in light of the existing literature, with recommendations provided to relevant researchers and practitioners.
