Epic type in Turkish language and literature course in secondary education

Epic, one of the most important witnesses of history, is an outstanding genre, playing an important role in shaping national identity, providing impressive examples of the fundamental dynamics of society and standing out as a means of education in the future as well as it was in the past. Young people are considered as the assurance of the future and their learning the elements that create the origins of a nation through epics, providing the persistence of what learn, is about the teaching way of the subject that is aimed to teach. The aim of this study is to determine the views of students and teachers in order to make epic teaching effective and permanent. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to reveal this aim. Qualitative interview method was applied to the students and the results were converted into tables. A questionnaire consisting of 42 questions was applied to determine the views of teachers. The data obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed with SPSS 20.0 software at 95% confidence level. When the opinions of students were evaluated; it was determined that the students could not answer the questions measuring the level of knowledge to remember the details in the epic texts and the permanence level was low in this context. For the teaching of the epic, the students suggested the application of different activities, the use of visual materials, and the production of short films for effective and permanent expression. When the teachers' opinions were evaluated; it was understood that they gave an opinion that the effectiveness and permanence of epic teaching in Turkish Language and Literature course was not complete. It was concluded that the deficiencies encountered in the epic teaching were due to the lack of educational opportunities, time and the diversity of the texts.
