An evaluation on the 4th grade secondary school students' skill of the use of verbals in written expression

This study has been carried out to identify the proficiency level about the students' use of verbals upskilled by the 2005 Secondary School Teaching Program. The question 'Is the 2005 Secondary School Teaching Program adequate in upskilling the students with the use of verbals?' forms the basis of the study. It also seeks answers to whether the skill of using verbals varies by the students' gender, SBS grade, total number of the verbs used, grade-point average of the Turkish subject, cumulative irade point average, total number of books read, total number of sentences formed and the type of written expression. In order to find answer to this question, 4th grade students who are studying at the Merkez Atatürk Secondary School in Çamlıdere town of the province Ankara forming the population of the study, were given assignments in line with the designated topics, the genres of memoir, trial, travel writing, and narrative being reminded with their characteristics. Later on, evaluations were made in the light of data obtained. 4th grade students who studied at the Merkez Atatürk Secondary School in the 2012-2013 school year in Çamlıdere town of the province Ankara forms the study sample. The study results showed that 2005 Secondary School Turkish Teaching Program was not adequate to help the students acquire the verbals. A meaningful difference exists in the acquisiton of verbals on behalf of female students. Furthermore, students who have a high SBS grade, use more verbs in total, have a high Turkish subject grade and academic success, form more sentences and words in total turned out to be more proficient in terms of the skill to use the verbal. Taking this result into consideration, the fact that activities on verbals that exist in course books should be in a convenient level for practice and grammar points should not only be taught in theory but also given in such a way to equip the students with the skill to use them in written expression will be a benefit for the students Key words: Skill, verbal, acquisiton, secondary school and written expression
