A study on the published materials for Turkish lesson in the secondary school (6 to 8th grades) with respect to listening/watching methods and techniques

Listening skill has thoroughly been embraced within the Turkish Lesson Teaching Program for Grades 6 to 8 and including minimum one listening text for each theme in a Turkish course book has become compulsory. The methods and techniques to be employed during the listening process have been mentioned in the Program as well. Seven types of listening methods/techniques are included within the Methods & Techniques part of the Program. These are; participatory listening, non-participatory listening, listening through note-taking, listening through empathizing the speaker, creative listening, selective listening and critical listening. In this study, the methods and techniques included within the listening texts in teacher's books of 6 to 8th grades Turkish lesson were determined. The methods and techniques used together with these texts, the types of the texts and the length of the texts in relation to the number of the words were all examined. Three teacher's books for each grade, one published by the Ministry and two by private publishers, were examined with regard to the listening texts. The data of this survey research were collected through document review technique and analyzed by means of descriptive analysis method. As a result of the study, it was seen each method and technique included in the Turkish Lesson Teaching Program for Grades 6 to 8 was used and that these methods and techniques were used in compliance with the application instructions given in the Program. 11 different types of texts were found out to be used within 55 listening texts examined. When the numbers of the words are concerned, the shortest text was seen to be consisting of 77 words, while the longest one 2245 words.
