The investigation of the relationship between decision making behaviours and subjective well-being of the elementary school 7th and 8th grade studuents

The main aim of this research, carried out by correlational model, is to analyze the correlation between the Elementary School 7th and 8th Grade adolescent students' subjective well-being levels and decision making behaviours. Sample is created by the 8th Grade students in Üsküdar, Istanbul. Sampling consists of 310 girls and 206 boys, in total 606 adolescents attending 10 different public schools chosen randomly by unproportional cluster sampling model. Data were gathered through personal information form and two scales "Adolescent Subjective Well-Being Scale" developed by Eryılmaz (2009) and "Adolescent Decision Making Scale" developed by Çolakkadıoğlu and Güçray (2007). Positive significant correlations were found between the Adolescent Decision Making Scale self-esteem subdimension and the Adolescent Subjective Well-Being Scale relationship satisfaction within the family members and with the other important ones, life satisfaction and positive emotions subdimension points. There is a meaningful correlation between the Adolescent Decision Making Scale prudent selectivity subdimension and the Adolescent Subjective Well-Being Scale relationship satisfaction within the family members and with the other important ones, positive emotions, life satisfaction subdimension points and subjective well-being total points. It has been identified that there is no significant correlation between the Adolescent Decision Making Scale panic and escaping from responsibility subdimensions and the Adolescent Subjective Well-Being Scale relationship satisfaction within the family members and with the other important ones, positive emotions, life satisfaction subdimension points and subjective well-being total points. Even though it has been identified that there is no meaningful correlation between the Adolescent Decision Making Scale indifference subdimension and the Adolescent Subjective Well-Being Scale relationship satisfaction within the family members and with the other important ones, positive emotions, life satisfaction subdimension points and subjective well-being total points, it has been identified that there is a meaningful correlation with the life satisfaction subdimension. The obtained results show that there is no meaningful difference in the adolescents' subjective well-being conditions with regards to the variables of mother and father occupation, gender, number of household and birth order whilst a meaningful difference has been identified for the variables of the family structure, age groups and perceived income level. As the comparison analyses are examined, no significant difference was detected in the Adolescent Decision Making Scale points for the variables of gender, family structure, number of household, perceived income level and birth order, various significant differences were encountered for the variables of gender, father occupation, mother occupation, father education level and mother education level. Conclusions are discussed in the direction of the research aims and various proposals are given fitting with the results. Key Words: Subjective Well-Being, Decision Making.
