Elementary school mathematics teachers' development in using teaching methods and techniques in angles subject and their opinions towards lesson study

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lesson study method subjected to elementary school mathematics teachers on the enrichment of the teaching methods and techniques used in their teaching practices. In addition, investigating teachers' opinions towards using lesson study was another purpose of this study. The research method utilized in this study was action research, one of the qualitative research methods. Among the random sampling methods, the participants were selected through purposive sampling method. Interview forms, observations, focus group interviews, field notes, dairies and some other documents were used as data collection tools. In addition, the study benefitted from audio and video recordings in order to support the data gathered from observations and interviews. The study completed in six weeks with three lesson study cycles. In this study, the data gathered from the study was analyzed through explanatory content analysis method. The process that Goetz and LeCopmte (1981) followed was used in this study's data coding processes. Within this framework, both the teachers' development in using teaching methods and techniques in angles subject and their opinions towards applied lesson study during planning and application phases of their lesson were investigated. The result of this study indicated that teachers gained broader perspective about the lesson study and, therefore, revised their lessons by using different teaching methods and techniques. After completing the lesson study applications with three cycles, it was observed that the number of teaching methods and techniques used by the participating teachers increased. Moreover, teachers indicated lesson study method's advantages, difficulties and disadvantages during planning and application phases of the lessons. According to the findings of this study, some recommendations were proposed for the lesson study research and applications.
